My experience with submodules is not great; I often ended up with detached
sub-branches that were a pain to deal with. Given that, I am trying to
understand if it's worth it, that's all. As opposed to, say, looking for a
way to installing the bits that are essential to building helpers in some
sort of squid-dev package, so we can just spin off completely those helpers
we don't want to maintain
