Lets see,
 * Chrome, fail
 * Firefox, works via Squid
 * MSIE, works via Squid
 * test tool, works via Squid

There is also the factum that direct non-proxied connections do not use
CONNECT mesages, nor Proxy-Auth mechanism. So the behaviour is not
easily comparible.

If you are able to find some trace that shows how things are breaking
through Squid, please followup with them. The access log trace by itself
is not enough to do more than what has already been pointed out.
