Thanks for your feedback, I will clean the patch up some more and send it to this list again.

I can probably do the removal of xstrerror, perhaps tomorrow. (Just got back from a 10-day work trip, so my schedule is a bit unsettled at the moment.) I'm not ready to take on a full audit of all uses of errno now, though -- perhaps after I clean my patches up well enough that they can be applied, you can go ahead and audit what remains?
